Expanding Our Ranks Is Critical

ASEE must clearly articulate its own strategy for broadening participation.

It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as the president of ASEE during this past year. Because of the outstanding commitment of both the staff and volunteers, we have made significant progress on many fronts.

In spite of the difficult financial times our country and the world face, the fiscal status of the Society continues to be strong. The financial success of the annual conference, the projects program, and the ASEE publications has made it possible to maintain ASEE dues at the same level since 2000. The staff and volunteers who have organized and run these activities are to be commended for their excellent work and willingness to streamline budgets in areas that will not substantially affect the quality of our programming. Both institutional and individual membership in the Society continues to grow. The institutional membership reached a new high of 588, and professional membership exceeded 10,000 for the first time, including 1,000 international individual members. Our corporate members continue to provide critical financial support and leadership to ensure our continued success. Prism magazine had its highest revenue-producing year in 2008 and received 13 awards for both editorial content and design.

As I write my last letter as president, I reflect on the progress we have made and the opportunities and challenges we face in the future. When I began my presidency in July 2008, we had not yet entered the worst economic crisis many of us have ever faced. We have seen firsthand how globally connected our economy is and the impact of the downturn on individuals, universities, and companies everywhere in the world. The problems are complex and will be solved only by bringing together bright, creative minds from a diverse set of backgrounds and perspectives. Engineering and engineering technology educators must play an important role in the recovery, not only providing innovative solutions but teaching new generations of graduates who will have the diversity of skills and perspective to solve these problems.


With the potential retirement of approximately 50 percent of the engineering workforce during the next five to 10 years, it is critical that we work together to broaden participation in engineering. We must find ways to increase interest in engineering, especially among our underrepresented populations. The National Academy of Engineering sought to do this in the recently completed study Changing the Conversation: Messages for Improving Public Understanding of Engineering. As Don Giddens, dean of the Georgia Institute of Technology’s College of Engineering and chair of the NAE Committee on Public Understanding of Engineering Messages, wrote in the study’s preface: “Given the concerns in the United States about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education to global competitiveness, national security, and quality of life,” the report “is especially timely.” It focuses not only on providing an accurate, more positive impression of engineering but also sustaining the U.S. capacity for technological innovation, attracting young people to careers in engineering, and improving technological literacy.

The project identified and tested a small number of messages likely to improve public understanding of engineering. A new, optimistic, and inspirational positioning statement was composed to guide future outreach activities. Emphasizing the connection between engineering and its possibilities, it states, “No profession unleashes the spirit of innovation like engineering. From research to real-world applications, engineers constantly discover how to improve our lives by creating bold new solutions that connect science to life in unexpected, forward-thinking ways. Few professions turn so many ideas into so many realities. Few have such a direct positive effect on people’s everyday lives. We are counting on engineers and their imaginations to help us meet the needs of the 21st century.”

In addition to recommending that the profession adopt this positioning statement, the report recommends four messages that tested well – “Engineers make a world of difference,” “Engineers are creative problem solvers,” “Engineers help shape the future,” and “Engineering is essential to our health, happiness, and safety.” The report also recommends more rigorous research on identifying and testing a small number of tag-lines, developing a shared public-relations resource, and launching a campaign to improve the public understanding of engineering. If you have not had the opportunity to read the report, I encourage you to do so. If you have, I encourage you to take an active role in carrying out the recommendations.

ASEE has an important leadership role to play in broadening participation in engineering and engineering technology and demonstrating our commitment to diversity. Enhancing public understanding of engineering is an important step in this process. However, it is also important that ASEE clearly articulate its role and the strategies we will undertake to achieve these goals. The ASEE Board of Directors approved the creation of a task force, under the leadership of Dr. Bevlee Watford, associate dean at Virginia Tech, to create a Diversity Strategic Plan. I encourage you to contribute to this process by submitting your ideas and recommendations to Dr. Watford or me. Together we will define a path forward that will maximize benefit to our members and ensure ASEE’s leadership in broadening participation in engineering and engineering technology.

As we move forward, I hope each of you will identify the role you can play in broadening participation in engineering and engineering technology. I look forward to hearing about your achievements at future ASEE meetings. Thank you for allowing me to serve as ASEE’s president during 2008-2009.

2009 ASEE K-12 WORKSHOPASEE members elected Renata S. Engel to serve as ASEE president-elect for 2009-2010. Engel is associate dean for undergraduate studies and international programs in the College of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. She will assume the position of ASEE president-elect at the 2009 Annual Conference and become president the following year.

The ASEE Annual Conference & Exposition hosts more than 400 technical sessions, with peer-reviewed papers spanning all disciplines of engineering education. Attendees include deans, faculty and researchers, students, and retirees. Distinguished lectures run throughout the conference, starting with the main plenary. In addition to various award receptions and banquets, ASEE hosts a complimentary “Meet the Board Forum,” providing the opportunity for all registrants to meet with members of the ASEE Board of Directors and discuss current issues in engineering and technology. The spouse/guest tours help make the conference an event for the entire family. Other highlights include the “Greet the Stars” orientation for new ASEE members and first-time conference attendees, the ASEE Picnic, and the “Focus on Exhibits” Happy Hour, Ice Cream Social, and Brunch. In order to strengthen the quality of conference proceedings, the ASEE Board of Directors has voted on a policy of “Publish to Present” at the ASEE annual conference. This policy, which requires all conference papers and presentations to be peer reviewed, seeks to ensure that intellectual activity by faculty and staff receives appropriate professional recognition.

The process for the submission of ASEE annual conference papers is as follows: Once authors have submitted abstracts of their papers, these will be reviewed and evaluated as acceptable or not. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper draft to be reviewed by at least three engineering educators. A draft paper may be accepted as submitted, accepted with minor changes or major changes, or rejected. If a paper requiring major changes is re-submitted, the author will be asked to provide an explanation to the division program chair as to how the paper revision has addressed the reviewers’ concerns. The division chair may then decide to accept or reject the paper.

Authors of accepted papers may also choose to present through a poster session rather than the lecture format of the technical sessions. The ASEE poster sessions will now showcase authors of accepted papers who have selected this format or whose papers have been assigned as a poster owing to lack of space in the technical sessions. Exceptions to the “Publish to Present” requirement include invited speakers and panels. Divisions may also designate one of their technical sessions as a “panel” of speakers submitting poster presentations.

The presentation of research and program findings within a conference setting provides a valuable means of exchanging information and ideas. While the majority of papers presented at the ASEE annual conference already undergo review at the abstract, draft, and final paper stages, the board feels confident that a rigorous process of review will safeguard the quality of all paper presentations and ensure the prestigious reputation of this important conference.

Public Policy Colloquium

WASHINGTON — More than 100 deans of engineering from around the country gathered here on February 17 and 18 for the Engineering Deans Council’s Public Policy Colloquium, which focused on the theme “Engineering Change.”

The event, held at the National Academy of Engineering, began with a welcome from Lance Davis, NAE executive officer, followed by an overview of federal funding for science and technology featuring Tobin Smith of the Association of American Universities, Jeffrey Mervis of Science magazine, and Samuel Rankin of the American Mathematical Society. The morning session also included a panel discussion, which provided an update on the 2007 America Competes Act, intended to ensure U.S. leadership in the global economy. Later, Tom Peterson, assistant director of the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Engineering, described the federal stimulus package, which was signed into law as the colloquium was meeting. Deans attended parallel breakout sessions on sustainable energy, K-14 engineering education, and how to work with Congress.

ASEE’s Engineering Deans Council is the leadership organization of the more than 300 colleges of engineering in the United States.





The ASEE Nominating Committee, chaired by Immediate Past President James Melsa, requests member participation in nominating board officers for the 2010 ASEE elections. Officers to be nominated for society-wide positions are president-elect; vice president, member affairs; chair, Professional Interest Council (PIC) I; chair, PIC IV; and chair, PIC V.

All nominees must be individual members or institutional-member representatives of ASEE at the time of nomination and must maintain ASEE membership during their term of office. Nominating committee members are not eligible for nomination. The slate of candidates selected by the committee will not exceed two candidates per office.

Candidates for president-elect must be active members who have served or are serving on the board of directors. Candidates for vice president, member affairs will be chosen from those who have served as zone chairs.

Candidates for chair of the Engineering Research Council, chair of the Engineering Technology Council, and chair-elect for Zone I and Zone III will be nominated and selected by their respective councils and zones, as the ASEE constitution stipulates.

For each proposed candidate for a society-wide office, submit a biographical sketch of fewer than 400 words that documents career contributions, ASEE offices held, awards and recognitions received, and educational background. Include comments on leadership qualities, ability to cooperate with others to achieve objectives, and willingness to serve if elected. A listing of members who meet constitutional eligibility requirements for the offices of president-elect and vice president, member affairs is available from the executive director’s office at ASEE headquarters.

Six ASEE Members Elected

WASHINGTON – Six active members of ASEE have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. They were among 65 new academy members and nine foreign associates whose election was announced February 6 by NAE President Charles M. Vest.

Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature,” and to the “pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education,” the NAE announcement said. The February election brings the total membership of the academy to 2,246 and the number of foreign associates to 197.

The ASEE members newly elected to the NAE and their engineering accomplishments, as cited by the academy, are:

Kristi S. Anseth, distinguished professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, department of chemical and biological engineering, University of Colorado, Boulder, for pioneering the rational design of biomaterials for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biosensing applications.

Jean-Lou Aristide Chameau, president, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, for national and international leadership and contributions in engineering education, geotechnical engineering, and public policy.

Mark S. Lundstrom, Don and Carol Scifres distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., for leadership in microelectronics and nanoelectronics through research, innovative education, and unique applications of cyberinfrastructure.

Umesh K. Mishra, professor, department of electrical and computer engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, for contributions to the development of gallium-nitride electronics and other high-speed, high-power semiconductor electronic devices.

Matthew O’Donnell, Frank & Julie Jungers dean of engineering and professor of bioengineering, University of Washington, Seattle, for contributions to biomedical ultrasonics and real-time ultrasound imaging technologies.

Howard A. Stone, Vicky Joseph professor of engineering and applied mathematics, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., for the development of fundamental concepts and novel applications in microfluidics and for improving the understanding of small-scale, viscous-flow phenomena.




Kirk H. Schulz, an ASEE fellow who most recently was vice president for research and economic development at Mississippi State University, has been named president of Kansas State University, succeeding Jon Wefald.

Schulz, 45, began his career in 1991 as an assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. He moved in 1995 to Michigan Tech as an assistant professor of chemical engineering. He was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and was named chair of the department of chemical engineering that same year.

In 2001, he moved to Mississippi State University to become director of the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering and holder of the Earnest W. Deavenport Jr. endowed chair. In 2005, he was selected as dean of the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering and the inaugural holder of the Earnest W. and Mary Ann Deavenport Jr. endowed chair. In 2007, he was named interim vice president for research and economic development and was named to the permanent position later in the same year.

An active member of ASEE, which named him a fellow in 2008, Schulz is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a member of ABET, the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, and a member of its Engineering Accreditation Commission. He also is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Schulz was born in Portsmouth, Va., in 1963 and grew up in Norfolk,Va., where he attended Norfolk Christian High School. He attended Old Dominion University for three years, then transferred to Virginia Tech in 1984. He graduated with B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He did his doctoral work in metal oxide surface chemistry.




Papadakis, Drexel President and ASEE Fellow, Dies

Drexel University President Constantine Papadakis, credited with lifting the Philadelphia school into the top-100 ranks, died April 5 of pulmonary complications. He was 63 and had been in remission from cancer. A civil engineer with a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Papadakis spent a decade in private industry before heading Colorado State University’s civil engineering department and then becoming dean of engineering at the University of Cincinnati. In his 14 years at Drexel, the university added a medical school and a law school, enrollment more than doubled, and freshman applications grew by 700 percent. An ASEE fellow, Papadakis also received numerous civic awards.
