_46W3556amy2.jpgCharles Q. Choi, who wrote our feature "The Brains Behind 'User Friendly,'" came up with the topic of cognitive engineering while perusing National Academy studies. Searching for new ideas is part of a freelance science writer's job, but Choi also enjoys joining researchers in the field as often as possible. He's accompanied paleontologists excavating dinosaurs in the Badlands of North Dakota, braved a Russian winter to examine Siberian mummies, and trudged through Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve. Beyond Prism, Choi has written for Scientific American, The New York Times, Science, and Nature. He lives in New York.

Kev JenkinsKen Orvidas, who illustrated the cover and lead story, lives and works in the Seattle area. He begins his illustrations, which are conceptual in nature, with pencil and acrylic paint, followed by computer manipulation and editing. Orvidas has created work for leading magazines, newspapers, corporations, book publishers, design firms, and advertising agencies. His images have won numerous awards.

David ZaxScott Rohe, who shot the portraits that accompany "The Good Fight," is a 22-year-old editorial photographer working out of Knoxville, Tenn. Rohe is someone who "lives photography" and feels strongly about the role of art in his life and work.
